Enhancing worldwide assistance to air accident victims and their families

Although air transport remains the safest mode of transportation, aviation accidents continue to have a catastrophic impact on society. Despite technological advancements, stringent safety standards, and rigorous training, tragic air accidents can still occur. Recognizing the importance of providing timely and adequate assistance to victims and their families, the Netherlands and ABIS countries are actively engaged in strengthening international cooperation and compliance with ICAO and EU regulations.
The ICAO Symposium on Assistance to Air Accident Victims and their Families (AAAVF2024) – held from 26 to 28 November in Haarlem, the Netherlands – brought together representatives from States, international organisations, the aviation industry, advocacy groups, and victim family associations. This article reflects on the Symposium and highlights a key takeaway: the uncoordinated communication with victims' families, which creates confusion and distress in the aftermath of an aircraft accident.
